What Is 3D Nail Art and How Much Does It Cost?

Nail technician schools prepare students to meet the moment, and right now, that moment is 3D nail art. If you’ve scrolled through Instagram or TikTok lately, you’ve likely seen nails adorned with sculpted flowers, rhinestones, or miniature charms that seem to leap off the nail.

From Hailey Bieber to Kylie Jenner, celebrities showed off bold, textured nails at Coachella 2025, solidifying 3D nail art as a top trend, but it’s not just a fad. 3D nail art is everywhere right now and is likely here to stay.

What is 3D nail art?

Examples of 3D Nails

So what is it, exactly? 3D nail art refers to designs built with raised elements that extend above the nail surface. Unlike traditional polish or decals, 3D designs use builder gels, acrylic, charms, crystals, and powders to create mini masterpieces.

Though currently trending worldwide, this style was first popularized in Japan and South Korea, especially within the Harajuku fashion scene. There, nails became a form of storytelling that is expressive, playful, and deeply personal.

How is 3D nail art done?

Tech with 3d nails

Students learn the 3D nail art philosophy in practice. They begin with sculpting gels, teaching how to layer builder gel over a cured base and mold it into detailed forms, florals, swirls, and abstract textures. Flash-curing between each step locks the design in place.

Students also use 3D stickers for quick dimension and apply powders over matte top coats to create embossed finishes. As skills evolve, they progress to more intricate techniques, such as securing charms, beads, and crystals with rhinestone gel and sealing them with soft builder gel for long-lasting wear.

Throughout, we focus on industry-proven techniques: flash-curing for structure, alcohol for smoothing edges, and custom gel mixing for truly one-of-a-kind results.

How much does 3D nail art cost?

Nail Tech Holding a Phone & Money

Nail technicians generally charge a range anywhere from $10 to $150 for 3D nail art, depending on the complexity. Simple accents on one or two nails may cost between $10 and $25, while a full set may cost $150 or more.

This reflects not just the cost of materials but also the time, artistry, and technical skills involved. For clients, it’s a luxury that is personal, fun, and still affordable. For nail techs, it’s a valuable skill that adds serious nail tech earning power.

Why it’s great for nail techs

We consider 3D nail art a great skill to learn for new nail tech professionals. It’s highly visual, perfect for social media, and one of the most shareable services in the nail industry. Even as a student, posting 3D sets can attract clients and build your brand. Many successful nail technicians launched their careers this way: with just a few social media photos and a small following, then momentum took off.

At A Plus Nail School, we don’t stop at the basic theory and skills for becoming a professional nail technician. We train students to master advanced techniques, such as 3D nail art, so they graduate prepared, inspired, and in high demand.

Whether you’re new to the industry or ready to take your skills to the next level, now’s the time to learn. Ready to begin your journey? Visit our Schedule a Tour page or explore upcoming events to discover the possibilities.
