Is it Necessary to Learn Acrylic to Become a Nail Tech?

Regardless of whether you’re an aspiring nail tech student or an established tech professional with their own client list, knowing a number of different techniques will help you satisfy clients who are looking for a specific look. That said, in the nail tech world, there are so many different techniques it could make one’s head spin. For instance, in addition to the more traditional acrylic enhancement, you now also have Aprés Gel-X, poly gel, dip powder, 4D gel, airbrushing, and gems, just to name a few.

Although acrylic nails are a popular technique, dating all the way back to at least the 1950s, nail art dates as far back as ancient Egypt. According to findings from Nails: The History of the Modern Manicure,” archeologists uncovered Egyptian mummies dating back to 5,000 BC with gilded and henna-tinted nails. Just like in ancient times, trends and techniques are always changing and improving.

You Don’t Need To Learn Every Technique As A Nail Tech

Although mastering a large number of techniques over time is possible for the best nail techs, it’s not a necessity that you learn every technique or application, including acrylic. In fact, Gel-X is often used as a nail enhancement substitution and is lighter and more flexible, with a lot of clients and techs preferring it over traditional acrylic nails. Trends in the nail tech world often change pretty quickly, so it’s okay if you don’t know a certain style or technique.

Many Schools Offer Acrylic Class In The Standard Classes

Before you start applying acrylics, Gel-X, poly gel, or any other kind of application, it’s required in every state to get your license by going to an accredited nail technician school. Getting your license vs. an unaccredited certificate is an important distinction, as licenses are provided by your state governing body and are what you’ll need to get first before you can do anyone’s nails. Otherwise, you could face fines or other penalties.

That said, going to nail technician school will likely teach you how to do acrylics. Many nail schools offer acrylic instruction as part of their basic courses. Better schools will provide additional training for other, arguably trendier techniques like Aprés Gel-X, so make sure you look at the classes provided so you’re going to a school that offers what you want to learn.

So, to answer the question of whether it’s totally necessary to learn acrylics to become a nail technician, the answer is no. That said, you should learn different techniques and applications so that you can provide your clients with the best service. In addition to acrylic and UV/LED Builder Gel, APlus Nail School has additional classes like Après Gel X Certification, Structured Manicure, 3D Acrylic, 4D Gel, and Marble/Ombre Acrylic just to name a few.
